Choosing Outdoor Cushion Colours

Do you struggle when it comes to choosing outdoor cushion colours to suit your home?

Outdoor cushions are a hugely popular and low cost way to decorate your outdoor furniture. Verandahs and patios are where families spend a great deal of time together outside and, particularly in the warm months, sitting outside is such a wonderful way to enjoy fresh air and time together.

With the increasingly common use of outdoor rooms like al fresco areas and undercover dining spaces for entertaining, so many people are now taking design and styling to the next levels. Decorating is such a fun yet also major consideration and style and comfort always come into the equation. Here are our tips on how to choose cushions to boost your outdoor decor vibes.

Choose bright colours

Oftentimes, especially indoors, we use more neutral coloured cushions to tie in the general feel and styling vibe of our homes. Outdoor areas bring a much larger array of colours to the forefront with greenery from our plants and trees, blue hues from a swimming pool and colours from our garden flowers. Using these colours in our cushions to tie in al fresco styling is a striking way to add pop and brightness to your outdoor area. Durability and style do not have to be two separate things!

Styling your cushions

If your outdoor area lacks vibrance, styling with more bold coloured cushions can help add volume to your colour wheel. We recommend choosing two main streams of colour and flowing on your styling from here. Whether it’s block colours or abstract patterns, you can really bring your outdoor furniture to life with deep blues, warm reds, bold yellows or striking greens to add vibrance. You may wish to choose different shaped cushions too from rectangular back cushions to larger 50cm comfy cushions for corners or dining chair backs. There is no need to restrict shapes or sizes!

Where to put them

Scattering your cushions on lounges and dining chairs, the floor or pool chairs, outdoor benches and sun lounges or storage baskets means you don’t have to limit placement. Place cushions angled on your sun lounge or squared off on your dining chairs. Otherwise you can throw them effortlessly onto larger outdoor family lounge furniture.

Consider quality

Choosing cushions that will stand the test of time is important. Some outdoor cushions are made from harder wearing fabrics that equate to being less comfortable than softer materials that won’t weather the elements as well. If you’re happy to store your cushions throughout cooler months, or replace them seasonally, you’ll find a much larger range of options available to you. You can use non-outdoor cushions anywhere you like, provided you’re comfortable with them wearing quickly and needing replacements.

Remember, House & Garden stocks an extensive range of cushions for both indoors and outdoors to help you the perfect ambience both indoor and outdoor entertaining and leisure.
